GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This position involves responsibility for the efficient, economical operation and maintenance of the transportation system of a school district. This position also requires skilled work involving responsibility for efficiently repairing a wide variety of automotive equipment. Work is performed under the direction of a Chief School Officer, Business Manager, or Supervisor of Transportation with considerable leeway in carrying out the duties of the position. Supervision is exercised over the work of Bus Drivers and Automotive Mechanics. Does related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Good knowledge of automotive vehicle operations; good knowledge of automotive maintenance practices; good knowledge of the geography of the area; good knowledge of safety procedures and traffic laws and regulations; ability to lay out work for self and others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare routine reports; ability to get along well with others; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of automotive equipment, or
2. Two (2) years of experience in the coordination, management or supervision of transportation activities or motor vehicle fleet operations for a school, transportation provider, or business which shall have included or be supplemented by one (1) year of part-time or full-time experience in the operation of a passenger bus, or
3. Two (2) years of experience as a service writer for an automotive service department which shall have included or be supplemented by one (1) year of part-time or full-time experience in the operation of a passenger bus; or
4. A satisfactory equivalent combination of experience as defined by the limits of A., B., and C. above.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must be at least 21 years of age, high school graduate and meet civil service requirements; Possession, at time of appointment and during service in this classification, of a valid NYS Class B CDL with (P) and School Bus endorsement; Complete a pre-employment three hour safety training program required by the New York State Department of Education; Complete thirty hours basic school bus driver training program within first year, as well as other training; Appointment is temporary until fingerprinting approval by New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Federal Bureau of Investigation; 19 A certified examiner preferred; certified school bus driver instructor preferred.
